Who knew Paul Mescal could do comedy? The world-famous softboi has been breaking the mould of his repertoire this year, shifting away from weepy dramas and moving into action blockbusters (Gladiator II) and, now, comedy (Saturday Night Live). Paul’s hosting gig on SNL originally had its sceptics. ‘Could this (very good) dramatic actor really do both?’ we wondered. Don’t worry. Paul knew what we were thinking. He even poked fun at himself in the opening monologue with compilation clips of him crying (comedically) on screen.
Throughout the show, he proved he could sing (fortunate for someone currently filming a 20-year musical), by doing his rendition of the climactic ‘Defying Gravity’ note. In the vital Wicked/Gladiator mash-up, Paul sang a triumphant “Ro-o-o-ooome’ while wearing full gladiator garb and sitting on a broomstick. In the grand tradition of the Natalie Portman rap, Mescal also broke his dramatic-actor persona by rapping and flossing with a Gladiator-themed rap penned by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Of course, Mescal’s comedy and musical chops aren’t the only reason his SNL appearance is garnering attention. Paul has continued to titillate his many admirers by wearing a sheer shirt and trousers. This is not Paul’s only exciting sartorial escapade. Of course, the comedy show couldn’t feature Paul Mescal without featuring his iconic short-shorts. Unfortunately (or not), they were only donned by newly-minted babygirl and internet boyfriend, Marcello Hernandez. “You know what they say, the shorter the shorts, the taller you look!” Marcello joked, while looking equally dishy in the shorts.
Mescal’s influence in this area has not gone unnoticed. After making a case for five-inch seams, we’ve seen other celebs, from Jonathan Bailey to Jacob Elordi, slip into their own slutty, little shorts. Whatever the occasion, we’re always happy to see Mescal show off his fashion excellence, acting skills and softboi charisma. The only question remaining is, where is the rom-com, Paul?
