How to Make Pecan Chewies Recipe
Ingredients
Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.
- Butter – You’ll need melted butter for this recipe. I use salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter if you prefer.
- Sugars – This recipe uses a mixture of both granulated and brown sugar.
- Vanilla extract – I love to use my homemade vanilla extract in my baking recipes, especially. You can also use your favorite good quality store-bought.
- Eggs – Allow your eggs to reach room temperature for better blending into the batter.
- Flour – This recipe uses self-rising flour.
- Pecans – The pecans add crunch and flavor to these bars. However, you can easily substitute with another nut such as walnuts if preferred or replace with chocolate chips if you need to avoid the use of all nuts.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Preheat the oven to 300º F. Butter a 9 x 13 baking dish. I also like to line my baking dish with parchment paper at the edges of the baking dish. This lets me easily lift the Pecan Chewies from the baking dish to finish cooling and to cut into bars. If you use the parchment, you’ll also want to butter the parchment paper.
Add your melted butter, granulated and brown sugars, and vanilla extract to a large mixing bowl.
Beat together with an electric mixer until well combined. Then, mix in your eggs.
Mix in your self-rising flour.
Mix until smooth.
Stir in your chopped pecans.
Spread the batter into your prepared baking dish.
Use a spatula and make sure that the batter is spread to the edges.
Place into the oven and bake until the Pecan Chewies are light brown and do not move when the baking pan is moved on the oven rack, about 45 minutes.
Allow to cool in the pan. Alternately, if you used the parchment paper lining in your baking dish, allow them to cool for about 5 minutes in the pan and then carefully lift them out of the baking dish using the extended edges of the parchment paper. Place them onto a wire rack and let them cool completely.
Use a sharp knife and cut the Pecan Chewies into 16 – 24 bars, depending on your preference.
That first one is totally irresistible and so delicious!
Recipe Variations
Nut-free Chewy Bars – Replace the pecans called for in the recipe with chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or your favorite mix-ins.
Chocolate Chip Pecan Chewies – Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips to the batter when you add the pecans.
Walnut Chewies – Replace the pecans in the recipe with walnuts.

I made this recipe and they tasted really good, but unfortunately it didn’t raise very much. I made my own self raising flour. Not sure if that was my problem.
Lola, these chewies won’t rise as much as a cake. They are more like chewy cookie bars.
looks good. but my question is. can I use All Purpose Flour in place of Self Rising Flour? TIA.
Lu, I have found that this recipe works better for me using self-rising flour. If you don’t have any, you can always make just enough for the recipe. See my post on How to Make Self-Rising Flour. Hope this helps.
I made these they are wonderful.
I’m so glad you liked these, Shirley. Thanks!
I’ve always made this receipe by stirring the ingredients. Does your recipe mean use a mixer to blend the ingredients together?
Pam, I use a mixer when making these pecan chewies. You can mix by hand if you prefer.
Gotta add flake salt to the top, out of the oven! Takes it to another level.
Thanks, JRC. I haven’t tried adding salt flakes when these finish baking.
Yummy !! I have tried this recipe several times and my family love ❤️ them . Thanks for sharing
Thanks, Joyce, for letting me know how much you and your family like these pecan chewies.
