Homemade Mocha recipe that you’ll turn to time and again. Made with fresh coffee and homemade hot cocoa mix, this mocha is a favorite.
It’s no secret that my morning gets started as soon as the coffee starts flowing. It’s just not a very good idea for me to try anything productive until I’ve had at least three or four sips of my liquid gold in the mornings. My family all knows that trying to get this brain in gear is just useless until my juices are flowing – and the quickest way to get mine flowing is with coffee. The smell of it brewing, the little ka-whush sound my Keurig makes as the last drops of goodness are streaming into my cup, and then sound of my spoon as it clinks on the mug stirring in my half-and-half or making my favorite homemade mocha.
Since it is raining and foggy and all yucky outside here today, I’m enjoying my deluxe version of my homemade mocha and knew you’d probably like one, too.
So, let me tell you about it.
These homemade mochas are so easy to make that if you are like me and love to order mochas from those fancy coffee shops, you’ll be thrilled at how quickly you can make your own in the mornings.
Brew your coffee as you would normally. We personally prefer to use a blend coffee that isn’t too strong, isn’t too light, but is just right! However, make this mocha your own by using whatever blend of coffee you enjoy.
Then mix in one heaping teaspoon of homemade hot chocolate mix, add a splash of half and half and stir. I’m a little bit biased about my homemade hot chocolate, but you can certainly use whatever hot chocolate mix you prefer. They are such a hit in my family that my father-in-law now carries a couple of packets of his favorite prepackaged hot chocolate with him in his carry on bag when he travels. You can count on him being ready for his homemade mocha after take off.
You can adjust the amount of hot chocolate mix used to best suit your taste.
If you want to go all out with the deluxe version, then add a bit of whipped cream and a few sprinkles to the top. You can switch up your sprinkles with cocoa, some colored sprinkles for whatever holiday or season we’re celebrating, or even just a bit of white sanding sugar for a snowy touch in the winter.
Plop in a stick of peppermint for a quick peppermint mocha or perfume your whipped cream with your favorite flavorings for even more flair. I have a few favorites coming up that I can’t wait to share with you. I think you’ll love them!

How much half and half am I supposed to put in?
Thanks
Rachel, I add a splash of half and half to mine but other people use more. Use as much as you prefer in your drink.
I’m so glad a mug of this kept you warm and toasty, Suzanne! I love to sip on this on a chilly night myself! Thanks so much!
Could I use sugar free chocolate hot cocoa or syrup
That’s a recipe that will definitely be tried in our house. I’m with you on not getting going until I have my coffee. Without the smell of coffee brewing, I don’t think I could get out of bed in the morning. 🙂
Robin, if I recieve many more recipes as good as the last two or three I am going to propose!!!! Hahaha just kidding!!!! Cocoa and raw honey with my coffee if you please!!! But at nite when its cool nothing like your Hot Mocha to warm up with!!!! “Add A Pinch” is awesome thanks!!!!
Thank you for the recipe! I made up a small batch of your hot chocolate this morning and added it to my coffee. Delicious! I even added a splash of english toffee syrup too to try and mimic a certain coffee chains salted caramel mocha and we have a winner!
I guess I like my coffee light. My husband teases me and says I have enough coffee for color with my French Vanilla creamer.
I love my coffee strong and bitter
